How to use it
- Read the live status above. It tests Xbox Live from outside your network.
- Open the official Xbox Live Status page for confirmed incidents.
- If Xbox Live is up, work through the fixes below, cheapest first.
- Press the report button if it still fails, so other visitors see it.
Is Xbox Live down for everyone or only for you?
Xbox Live is the online layer of Xbox consoles, the Xbox app and Windows games. It handles your Microsoft account sign-in, your profile and friends list, party chat, cloud saves, game ownership checks and multiplayer. Because ownership checks run online, a sign-in problem can stop even a game you own from launching.
Our check requests the Xbox website and the Microsoft account sign-in page from outside your network. Microsoft also keeps an Xbox status page that breaks services into groups such as sign-in, social and multiplayer, and that page is the better guide when only one feature is failing.
The live check on this page requests www.xbox.com and login.live.com from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside Xbox Live works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.
What usually breaks with Xbox Live
Sign-in and profile
The console says it cannot sign you in, shows an error code or keeps you offline. Sign-in relies on Microsoft account services.
Game ownership and launch
A game you own will not start or says it cannot verify the license. Ownership checks need to reach Microsoft's services.
Multiplayer and party chat
Parties will not form, voice cuts out or games say the network is unavailable. NAT type and router settings matter here as well as the service.
Store and downloads
The Microsoft Store on Xbox will not open or downloads stall. Downloads use a content network separate from sign-in.
Cloud saves and Game Pass
Saves do not sync or Game Pass titles show as unavailable. These tie back to your account and subscription status.
How to fix Xbox Live when it only fails for you
Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.
- Check the Xbox status page. Open the Xbox Live status page and see whether sign-in, social or multiplayer is flagged. If a service is listed as limited, waiting is the fix.
- Test the console connection. Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile and system, Settings, General, Network settings, and run Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection.
- Power cycle the console. Hold the power button on the console for about 10 seconds until it shuts off, wait a minute, then turn it on. This clears the cache without deleting games.
- Restart the router. Unplug the router and modem for a minute. In Network settings check that your NAT type is Open or Moderate for the best multiplayer results.
- Remove and re-add your profile. In Settings go to Account, Remove accounts, then add your Microsoft account again. Your games and saves stay on your account.
- Check the clock and date. In Settings, System, Time, make sure the date and time are correct. A wrong clock can break sign-in.
- On PC, update Xbox app and Gaming Services. Open the Microsoft Store, go to Library and install updates for the Xbox app and Gaming Services, then restart Windows.
- Check subscription and payment. On account.microsoft.com open Services and subscriptions. An expired Game Pass or Xbox Live subscription blocks online play.
If none of this helps and the live check above shows the service as up, read our guide on why a website is not loading, or see how to flush DNS.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if Xbox Live is down?
Check the live result above and the Xbox status page. The status page lists services separately, so you can tell whether sign-in, multiplayer or the store is affected.
Why can I not play single player games offline?
Some games need an online ownership check. If the console is not set as your home Xbox, games may refuse to start until it can reach the service.
Is Game Pass affected when Xbox Live is down?
It can be. Game Pass checks your subscription online, so installed titles may not launch while sign-in is failing.
Does a bad NAT type mean Xbox Live is down?
No. NAT type is a router setting. It limits who you can join in multiplayer but does not mean the service is offline.
What if my account is locked?
Use the official Microsoft account recovery page. Never share your password or security codes with anyone who contacts you.
