How to use it
- Read the live status above. It tests Minecraft from outside your network.
- Open the official Minecraft Help Center (service statuses) page for confirmed incidents.
- If Minecraft is up, work through the fixes below, cheapest first.
- Press the report button if it still fails, so other visitors see it.
Is Minecraft down for everyone or only for you?
Minecraft is not one big service. Singleplayer worlds run entirely on your device and keep working with no internet at all. What needs the internet is your Microsoft account sign-in, the session service that proves your account is real when you join an online server, and Realms, which are servers hosted for you. Most multiplayer servers are run by third parties, so a server that is offline is usually that server's problem and not Minecraft's.
Our check requests the Minecraft website and the Mojang session server from outside your network. If both answer, account services are reachable. A failure to join one particular server, an outdated game version or a blocked port is far more common than a platform outage.
The live check on this page requests www.minecraft.net and sessionserver.mojang.com from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside Minecraft works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.
What usually breaks with Minecraft
Account sign-in
The launcher or game cannot sign in with your Microsoft account, or the Minecraft Launcher keeps asking you to log in again. This depends on Microsoft and Xbox sign-in, not only on Mojang.
Joining online servers
You can sign in but every online server says it cannot verify you. That points at the session service that checks your login when you connect.
One server only
Everything works except one server. The server may be offline, full, whitelisted or running a different game version.
Realms
Your Realm will not load or shows as unavailable while other online play works. Realms use their own hosting and need an active subscription.
Skins, capes and the store
Skins do not show or the in-game Marketplace is empty. This is the content side of the service and does not affect your ability to play.
How to fix Minecraft when it only fails for you
Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.
- Restart the game and launcher. On Java Edition close the Minecraft Launcher completely, then reopen it and press Play. A stale login session is the most common cause of verification errors.
- Match the version to the server. In the Java launcher open Installations and pick the version the server uses. On Bedrock, update the game from the Microsoft Store, Google Play, the App Store or your console store.
- Check the server address. In Multiplayer press Edit on the server entry and look for typos. Java servers use port 25565 by default, so leave the port off unless the host gave you another.
- Sign out and in again. In the Java launcher use the account menu to sign out, then sign back in with your Microsoft account. On Bedrock, sign out of Microsoft in Settings and sign in again.
- Allow Minecraft through the firewall. On Windows allow javaw.exe (Java Edition) or Minecraft.Windows.exe (Bedrock) through Windows Defender Firewall on private and public networks.
- Check console network settings. On Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, run the console's network test. Console multiplayer also needs your platform subscription to be active.
If none of this helps and the live check above shows the service as up, read our guide on why a website is not loading, or see how to flush DNS.
Common Minecraft error messages
| Message or code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Failed to connect to the server | Your game could not reach the server. The line of Java text under it names the real cause, such as a timeout or a refused connection. | Check the address and version, confirm the server is online, and allow Java through the firewall. |
| Connection timed out | Nothing answered at the address you entered. The server is down, the address is wrong or something is dropping the traffic. | Verify the IP and port with the server owner and test from another network. |
| Invalid session (Try restarting your game) | Your login session no longer matches what the session service holds, for example after signing in on another copy of the game. | Close the game and launcher fully, then open them again and rejoin. |
| Failed to verify username | The server could not confirm your account with the session service, either because of a service problem or a login that expired. | Restart the launcher, sign in again and retry after a few minutes. |
Official Minecraft status and support
The company itself has the final word on outages. Check Minecraft Help Center (service statuses) for confirmed incidents and use Minecraft Help Center if your account has a problem that is not an outage. We are not affiliated with Minecraft.
Facts and menu names on this page were checked against the official sources below on October 25, 2026. Apps change their menus, so a setting may sit in a slightly different place in your version.

Frequently asked questions
Is Minecraft down or just my server?
Run the live check above, then try a second server or a Realm. If other servers work, your original server is the problem. If nothing online works and singleplayer does, account or session services may be the cause.
Does Minecraft have an official status page?
The Minecraft Help Center lists service statuses. I could not confirm a separate standalone status site, so use the help center and the console platform status pages for Xbox and PlayStation.
Why does singleplayer work but multiplayer does not?
Singleplayer runs on your device. Multiplayer needs account verification, a working route to the server and a matching game version. Any of those can fail alone.
Can an outage on Xbox or Microsoft affect Minecraft?
Yes. Minecraft accounts sign in through Microsoft, so a Microsoft sign-in problem can block login even when Minecraft's own services are fine.
