Is YouTube Down?

Videos stuck on a spinner, a black player or a Something went wrong message? The live check shows whether YouTube answers from outside your network, and the fixes below cover the cases where only your device or app is at fault.

Checking YouTube…

Reading the latest result from our servers.

We test www.youtube.com and www.youtube.com from our servers. This shows whether the public addresses answer, not what happens inside the app.

Tell us if YouTube does not work for you. One report per visitor every 10 minutes.

Checks run on our servers. We do not keep a list of the addresses you check.

How to use it

  1. Read the live status above. It tests YouTube from outside your network.
  2. Open the official YouTube error troubleshooting page for confirmed incidents.
  3. If YouTube is up, work through the fixes below, cheapest first.
  4. Press the report button if it still fails, so other visitors see it.

Is YouTube down for everyone or only for you?

YouTube is a web page, a video delivery network and a set of apps for phones, smart TVs and game consoles. The page that holds titles, comments and recommendations can load while the video itself fails, because the video stream comes from a separate delivery system. During a partial problem, YouTube may show a stripped down watch page without likes, comments or the description.

Our check requests the YouTube website and a small connectivity endpoint from outside your network. If both answer, YouTube is reachable and the trouble is probably your browser, the app, your DNS settings or a single device.

The live check on this page requests www.youtube.com and www.youtube.com from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside YouTube works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.

What usually breaks with YouTube

The home page or app will not load

You see a blank page, an endless spinner or Error loading the page, please try again. This points at the web front end or at a local network problem.

Video will not play

The page loads but the player shows a black frame, buffers forever or says Playback error. Tap to retry. The video delivery side is struggling or your connection cannot sustain the chosen quality.

Comments, likes and recommendations missing

The watch page loads with only the video. This is the reduced page YouTube may serve when part of the service is under strain.

Smart TV and console apps

The app opens but shows a grey screen or cannot sign in. TV apps are old software that often needs a power cycle or an update.

How to fix YouTube when it only fails for you

Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.

  1. Lower the video quality. Click the gear icon in the player, choose Quality and pick a lower resolution. YouTube lists about 5 Mbps as a sustained speed for 1080p, so a weak connection fails at high settings first.
  2. Try a private window with extensions off. Open an incognito or private window and disable ad blockers and other extensions. YouTube Help names ad blockers as a known cause of player errors.
  3. Clear browser cache and cookies. In Chrome open Settings, Privacy and security, Delete browsing data, and clear cached images and cookies for the past hour or day, then sign in again.
  4. Clear the app cache on Android. Open Settings, Apps, YouTube, Storage and tap Clear cache. On iPhone, offload or delete and reinstall the app from the App Store.
  5. Power cycle a smart TV or streaming box. Unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds and plug it back in. YouTube Help says this is often the most effective way to fix TV playback problems.
  6. Check your DNS settings. YouTube Help warns that a third-party app can change DNS settings and cause the Something went wrong message. Reset your DNS to automatic or to your provider's default.

If none of this helps and the live check above shows the service as up, read our guide on why a website is not loading, or see how to flush DNS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if YouTube is down or if it is just me?

Run the live check at the top. If YouTube answers from our server but not from your device, the issue is local. Open m.youtube.com on a phone using mobile data. If it plays there, your home network or computer is the cause.

Does YouTube have an official status page?

YouTube does not publish a public status page that we could verify. YouTube Help has a troubleshooting article for video errors, and the live check on this page tests whether the site answers.

Why does YouTube work on my phone but not my TV?

TV apps run on their own software. Unplug the TV for 30 seconds, update the YouTube app from the device's app store and check that the TV clock and network are set correctly.

Why does YouTube say Something went wrong only in my browser?

That points to the browser: an extension, a stale cache or changed DNS settings. Test a private window with extensions off, then clear cache and cookies.
