Is Twitch Down?

Twitch streams stuck on black, chat not loading or an error number on the player? The check below shows whether Twitch answers, and the fixes cover the usual browser and app problems.

Checking Twitch…

Reading the latest result from our servers.

We test www.twitch.tv and api.twitch.tv from our servers. This shows whether the public addresses answer, not what happens inside the app.

Tell us if Twitch does not work for you. One report per visitor every 10 minutes.

Checks run on our servers. We do not keep a list of the addresses you check.

How to use it

  1. Read the live status above. It tests Twitch from outside your network.
  2. Open the official Twitch Status page for confirmed incidents.
  3. If Twitch is up, work through the fixes below, cheapest first.
  4. Press the report button if it still fails, so other visitors see it.

Is Twitch down for everyone or only for you?

Twitch status groups Login, Web, Chat, Video (Watching), Video (Broadcasting), Purchases and Customer Support. They are separate. Chat can be fine while video stalls, or video can play while you cannot sign in. Streamers add one more layer: if one channel is broken but others play, the problem may be that broadcaster.

Our check requests the Twitch website and the public API endpoint from outside your network. If both answer, Twitch is reachable. Then try a few channels. If every channel fails on one device, look at the browser, extensions or network.

The live check on this page requests www.twitch.tv and api.twitch.tv from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside Twitch works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.

What usually breaks with Twitch

Video will not play

A black screen, endless spinner or numbered error. Video delivery is its own service on the status page.

Chat not loading

Chat shows connecting or stays empty while video plays. Chat is a separate component.

Login and purchases

Sign in fails or Bits and subscriptions do not go through. Both are listed separately on the status page.

Streamer side

A single channel is offline, buffering or low quality even though Twitch is healthy. That is a broadcast problem.

Mobile and TV apps

The app crashes or shows a blank page after an update.

How to fix Twitch when it only fails for you

Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.

  1. Compare with the status page. Open status.twitch.com and look at Video (Watching) and Chat.
  2. Try several channels. If only one channel fails, the streamer is the cause. If all fail, continue.
  3. Pause extensions. Turn off ad blockers and other extensions for twitch.tv. They are a known source of playback errors.
  4. Switch to Auto quality. Click the gear in the player, open Quality, and choose Auto. Lower it if buffering continues.
  5. Clear cache and cookies. In Chrome use Settings, Privacy and security, Delete browsing data for twitch.tv. Reload and sign in.
  6. Try another browser. Test in Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Turn off hardware acceleration in the browser if the video is black.
  7. Update or reinstall the app. Update Twitch from the app store. On a console or TV remove and reinstall the app. Your follows are stored on your account.
  8. Change network. Try mobile data. Restart your router and turn off a VPN.

If none of this helps and the live check above shows the service as up, read our guide on why a website is not loading, or see how to flush DNS.

Frequently asked questions

Is Twitch down or just one stream?

Run the live check and try another popular channel. If others play, the first stream has a broadcaster problem.

Where is the official Twitch status page?

status.twitch.com. It lists Login, Web, Chat, Video and Purchases.

Why does Twitch show a black screen?

Common causes are extensions, a hardware acceleration setting or an old browser.

Why does chat not load?

Chat is separate from video. Refresh, disable extensions and check the Chat status.

Should I use a VPN to fix it?

No. Turn off any VPN first. It can cause network errors.
