Is OneDrive Down?

OneDrive will not sign in, stopped syncing or shows a hex error code? The live check shows whether OneDrive and Microsoft sign-in answer, and the error table follows Microsoft's own OneDrive support articles.

Checking OneDrive…

Reading the latest result from our servers.

We test onedrive.live.com and login.live.com from our servers. This shows whether the public addresses answer, not what happens inside the app.

Tell us if OneDrive does not work for you. One report per visitor every 10 minutes.

Checks run on our servers. We do not keep a list of the addresses you check.

How to use it

  1. Read the live status above. It tests OneDrive from outside your network.
  2. Open the official Microsoft 365 Service Health page for confirmed incidents.
  3. If OneDrive is up, work through the fixes below, cheapest first.
  4. Press the report button if it still fails, so other visitors see it.

Is OneDrive down for everyone or only for you?

OneDrive has two halves. The cloud service stores your files and serves onedrive.live.com. The sync app on Windows and Mac keeps a local folder in step with the cloud and depends on your Microsoft account or work account sign-in. A sign-in problem or a damaged sync app can stop syncing while your files are perfectly safe online.

Our check requests the OneDrive website and the Microsoft account sign-in page from outside your network. A refusal from the website still means the server answered. If both respond, Microsoft suggests opening OneDrive online and checking the Service Health portal. Many OneDrive error codes point to the local app, your account or TLS settings, not to an outage.

The live check on this page requests onedrive.live.com and login.live.com from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside OneDrive works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.

What usually breaks with OneDrive

Can't sign in

Codes 0x8004de40 and 0x8004de88 mean the app is having trouble connecting to the cloud, often a network or TLS problem.

Wrong or missing account

Codes 0x8004de85 and 0x8004de8a mean the account is missing or a personal and a work account are mixed up.

Sync stuck

The sync app stops making progress. A reset often clears it.

Files On Demand

Code 0x8007016A means OneDrive is having trouble with Files On Demand placeholders.

Storage full or frozen account

Code 0x8004def7 means you are over your storage limit or the account is suspended.

How to fix OneDrive when it only fails for you

Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.

  1. Check OneDrive online. Select the OneDrive cloud icon, then Help & Settings, then View online. If your files open there, the cloud service works and the issue is the sync app.
  2. Check the Service Health portal. Microsoft points to its Service Health portal when sign-in fails or the connection times out. Also test Outlook.com. If it fails too, the problem may be wider.
  3. Reset OneDrive. Press Win+R and run onedrive.exe /reset from %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\ or the Program Files folder. Then start OneDrive again. Files are not deleted, but you will need to set up synced folders again.
  4. Confirm the right account. Open OneDrive Settings (Preferences on Mac), select the Account tab and check that the expected personal or work account is listed.
  5. Turn on TLS 1.2. For 0x8004de40, press Win+R, run inetcpl.cpl, open the Advanced tab and check the TLS 1.2 option. Older TLS versions can cause this error.
  6. Rerun the OneDrive installer. For 0x80070005, install Windows updates, press Win+R, open %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\update and run OneDriveSetup.exe.
  7. Toggle Files On Demand. For 0x8007016A, clear Save space and download files as you use them in OneDrive settings, reset OneDrive, then turn it back on.

If none of this helps and the live check above shows the service as up, read our guide on why a website is not loading, or see how to flush DNS.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I check if OneDrive is down?

Microsoft's OneDrive error code article points to the Service Health portal. You can also check whether onedrive.live.com opens in a browser.

Will resetting OneDrive delete my files?

No. A reset disconnects sync connections and you need to set up synced folders again, but files on your PC and in the cloud stay where they are.

OneDrive works online but will not sync. Why?

The cloud service is fine, so the cause is the sync app, your account sign-in or a local setting. Check the error code, the Account tab and try a reset.

Does an Outlook.com outage affect OneDrive?

Both use your Microsoft account. Microsoft suggests testing Outlook.com: if it works, a OneDrive problem is likely temporary. If it fails too, it may be account-related or a wider outage.

I changed my password and OneDrive stopped. What now?

Error 0x8004de96 often appears after a Microsoft account password change. Microsoft links it to its article on the You're syncing a different account error. Use official account recovery if you are locked out.
