Is Grok down for everyone or only for you?
Grok is reached in three ways: the grok.com website, the Grok features inside the X app, and the xAI API used by developers. They share models behind the scenes, but each one has its own sign-in and its own limits. A failure on the X app side does not always mean grok.com is down.
Our check requests grok.com and the API host from outside your network. The API host may answer with an unusual status, which still shows it is alive. Developers have a separate set of documented error codes, shown below.
The live check on this page requests grok.com and api.x.ai from our servers every few minutes. A normal answer from those addresses means the service is reachable from outside your network. It does not prove that every feature inside Grok works, which is why the problem reports and the fixes below matter.
What usually breaks with Grok
Chat will not respond
The message sends but nothing comes back or the reply stops midway. Heavy demand or a model problem is common.
Sign-in problems
Login through X or email fails. The account link between X and Grok is a separate step.
Rate and usage limits
You hit a usage cap and get a wait notice. This is a plan limit, not an outage.
Images and voice
Image generation or voice fails while text chat works, because they run on separate features.
API calls
Developer calls return error codes. The xAI debugging page lists what each code means.
How to fix Grok when it only fails for you
Start at the top. The first steps are the cheapest and fix most cases that are not a real outage.
- Reload the page or restart the app. Press Ctrl+Shift+R on grok.com. On a phone, force close the Grok or X app and reopen it.
- Switch between web and app. If grok.com fails, try Grok in the X app, or the other way round. This tells you which path is down.
- Start a new chat. A very long thread can fail while a new one works. Open a new conversation and resend the prompt.
- Update the app. Install the latest Grok or X app version from your store.
- Turn off extensions. Privacy tools and script blockers can interfere with the page. Test in a private window.
- Sign out and in again. Sign out on grok.com, then sign in with the same method you used before.
- Check your plan limits. If you reach a usage cap, wait for the window to reset or look at your plan.
- For API users, read the error code. Use the codes on the xAI debugging page and slow the request rate on 429 errors.
